115 consecutive days of more than wind force 4 in sumer 2008!
2008 was one of the windiest seasons in Prasonisi. Even the pre and after season was amazingly windy! 115 consecutive days of more than wind force 4 in summer 2008!
Prasonisi is already well known as one of the most reliable spots for its wind. The latest season was blessed with unbelievably steady winds! From 1st May until 30th September the wind blew 141 days out of 153 (92%)with a minimum of force 4! And on 82 of these days the wind howled with wind force 6 or even stronger (54%).
Why is Prasonisi such a reliable place for our passion? Between the high pressure system of the Azores and the low of the monsoon, this breeze blows all summer long, bringing joy to surfers’ hearts. Squeezed between the massive areas of low and high pressure, this air-flow accelerates to reach its peak in the Aegean Sea. In the north, the Meltemi hits the Turkish mountain breeze to speed up and turning to its western wind direction. From there on, the topography of each spot is the deciding factor of when and how strong the Meltemi cools the summer heat. Wind principally accelerates at corners and along edges. On Rhodes, only the outermost parts the island benefits f rom this aerodynamic ef fect . Si tuated on the southernmost end of the island Prasonisi is fully exposed to this aerodynamic principle. The „discoverer“ of the channel effect, Venturi, describes the acceleration of air streams at narrow places in the landscape: the wind velocity is clearly increasing in these areas, as opposed to their surrounding.
This small, protruding island and the southern tip of Rhodes channel the air again, and the Meltemi puts its foot down hard on the gas pedal. On average, wind speed here is 1-2 wind forces above any other part of the island.
Hope we gonna break the records from the past this season!
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the warm, windy and reliable Prasonisi!
